What kind of cancer does Verzenio treat?
Verzenio (abemaciclib) is a medication that is used to treat certain types of cancer, particularly those that involve uncontrolled cell growth. Verzenio is a type of targeted therapy, which means it works by targeting specific proteins or pathways that are involved in the growth and spread of cancer cells.
Currently,
Verzenio is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat
several different types of cancer, including:
- Advanced or Metastatic Breast Cancer Verzenio is approved to treat advanced or metastatic breast cancer that is hormone receptor (HR)-positive and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-negative. It is typically used in combination with other medications, such as hormonal therapies like letrozole or fulvestrant.
- Advanced or Metastatic Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Verzenio is approved to treat advanced or metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) that has a specific genetic mutation called cyclin-dependent kinase 4/6 (CDK4/6). It is typically used in combination with another targeted therapy called fulvestrant.
- Advanced or Metastatic Hormone Receptor-Positive, HER2-Negative Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor (GIST) Verzenio is approved to treat advanced or metastatic gastrointestinal Stromal tumor (GIST) that is hormone receptor-positive (HR+) and HER2-negative. It is used in patients whose cancer has progressed despite treatment with imatinib and sunitinib.
- Advanced or Metastatic Hormone Receptor-Positive, HER2-Negative Endometrial Cancer Verzenio is approved to treat advanced or metastatic endometrial cancer that is hormone receptor-positive (HR+) and HER2-negative. It is used in patients whose cancer has progressed despite treatment with hormonal therapy.
In all of
these cancers, Verzenio is used to slow or stop the growth and spread of cancer
cells. By targeting specific proteins and pathways involved in cancer cell
division, Verzenio can help reduce the size of tumors and delay the progression
of the disease.
Like all
cancer treatments, Verzenio can have side effects, and it is important to work
closely with your healthcare team to manage any side effects and ensure that
you are getting the most benefit from your treatment. Your healthcare team can
also help you understand the risks and benefits of different treatment options
and make informed decisions about your care.
